What this means

First Pass Yield (FPY) is the share of input units accepted on their first pass, without rework, rerun, repair or retest. It exposes work that final yield alone can hide.

Final yield adds units that became acceptable after rework. In this exact three-outcome model, the difference between final yield and FPY is the rework rate.

Every input unit must be assigned once: passed first time, good after rework or scrapped. The calculator withholds all rates when those counts do not reconcile, rather than inventing an unaccounted category.

Formula & worked example

First Pass Yield = passed first time ÷ input units
final good = passed first time + good after rework
final yield = final good ÷ input units
rework rate = good after rework ÷ input units
scrap rate = scrapped units ÷ input units

Common questions

Why show FPY and final yield separately?
Final yield can look strong even when substantial rework was needed. FPY shows the share accepted first time; final yield shows the share accepted after the entered rework outcome is included.
What counts as good after rework?
Use units that initially failed your acceptance criteria but became acceptable after the rework, repair, rerun or retest process your operation defines.
Is scrap rate the same as defect rate?
No. Scrap rate is a share of units assigned to the scrap outcome. A unit may contain several defects, and a defective unit may instead be reworked.
Why must all counts add up exactly?
Exact reconciliation prevents missing, duplicated or differently scoped units from producing misleading rates. Use the same process boundary and observation period for every count.
