What this means

Takt time is the demand-driven allowable pace: available production time divided by customer demand in the same period. It describes how often one unit must be completed to match that demand.

Cycle time is the measured time entered for one process to complete one unit. A shorter cycle is mathematically ahead of takt; a longer cycle has a pace gap. The comparison does not prove that a line, team or delivery plan can sustain the result.

Available production time subtracts only the scheduled time you enter—for example planned breaks, meetings or clean-up. Do not subtract unplanned downtime merely to make the takt easier to meet.

Formula & worked example

available production time = period length − planned excluded time
takt time = available production time ÷ customer demand
required rate = customer demand ÷ available production time
mathematical capacity = available production time ÷ actual cycle time
pace gap = takt time − actual cycle time

480-minute period, 60 planned excluded minutes, demand of 240 units and an actual cycle of 1.6 minutes

Common questions

What belongs in planned excluded time?
Include scheduled time that is not available for production under your operating definition, such as planned breaks, meetings or clean-up. Keep the period and demand boundary consistent.
Why not subtract unplanned downtime?
Takt expresses the pace required by demand within scheduled available time. Subtracting process problems can make the required pace look easier without changing customer demand.
Does a cycle faster than takt guarantee enough output?
No. This is a one-process mathematical comparison. Variability, downtime, quality losses, staffing, changeovers, product mix and constraints elsewhere can change actual output.
Why show both raw and whole-unit capacity?
Raw capacity preserves the arithmetic. The whole-unit figure is its floor because a fraction of a completed unit is not whole output; neither figure is a production promise.
