What this means

In this calculator, observed MTBF is aggregate operating time divided by the number of recorded failures. Definitions of “between failures” vary in practice, so the result is labelled as operating time per observed failure rather than treated as a universal interval convention.

MTTR is the entered active corrective-repair time divided by the same failure count. It deliberately excludes logistics, waiting, administration, preventive maintenance and any downtime not represented by that input.

The availability figure reconciles the entered totals in two equivalent ways: operating time ÷ (operating time + active repair time), and MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR). It is a descriptive estimate under this narrow inherent-availability definition—not achieved availability, a probability of failure-free operation or a forecast.

Common questions

Does MTBF predict when the next failure will happen?
No. This result divides aggregate observed operating time by recorded failures. It is not a probability, countdown, maintenance interval or forecast for the next failure.
What repair time belongs in MTTR here?
Enter active corrective-repair time for the same failures and observation boundary. Do not include logistics delay, administration, preventive maintenance or waiting time if you want the narrow inherent-availability relationship shown here.
Why must there be at least one failure?
Operating time divided by zero failures has no finite observed MTBF in this model. A zero-failure period needs different statistical treatment, which this calculator does not provide.
Can active repair time be zero?
Yes. Zero entered active repair time produces MTTR of zero and 100% for this narrow entered-time estimate. It does not prove that the asset has no other downtime or will remain available.
Is this operational availability?
No. Operational availability can include logistics, administration, preventive maintenance and other real-world delays. This calculator uses only entered operating and active corrective-repair time.
