What this means
Two discounts are applied one after the other. A 20% discount followed by 10% leaves 72% of the original price, so the combined discount is 28%—not 30%.
Optional tax is applied to the already-discounted amount. Reverse mode divides the entered final price by the same discount and tax factors to recover the original price.
Formula & worked example
discount factor = (1 − first discount) × (1 − second discount) final price = original price × discount factor × (1 + tax) original price = final price ÷ [discount factor × (1 + tax)]
$100 with 20% off, then 10% off, then 5% tax
- After first discount
- $80
- After second discount
- $72
- Tax
- $3.60
The final price is $75.60. The two discounts combine to 28%.
Common questions
Why don't two discounts simply add together?
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Multiplying the remaining-price factors gives the correct combined discount.
Is the tax rate automatic?
No. Enter a rate only when it suits your calculation. The calculator does not infer a location or an official rate.
Does reverse mode include tax?
Yes. It reverses the exact two discount factors and the optional post-discount tax factor shown in the inputs.
